What does Christmas mean to you?

What does Christmas mean to you?

What is this Christmas or holiday season about? Is it the season of giving, sharing , and Joy?

Joy – Joy to the World, for the Lord has come. Peace on Earth, goodwill to all men.

“And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
Luke 2:9-14

Growing up in a Christian tradition, I witnessed the Christmas season, and all the things we did to herald the birth of the babe Jesus on Christmas Day, as is celebrated. And this involved a great deal of work. For instance, we repainted the whole house, cleaned and polished all the floors. And cleaned the yard or landscaped the home surroundings. New curtains were made and put up or installed. Cakes were made. Gifts were bought, Christmas cards were sent to friends and family. A great deal of preparation was done for the Christmas Day, and all this was done like two (2) weeks before December 25th.

This was a mammoth exercise, especially if you came from a very large home. And, this involved lots of energy. I guess this was a good exercise or projects for children or young adults, who had the necessary energy to perform all those tasks. Also, there were lessons of disciple, perseverance, and tolerance to be learned during all this. For, now as a mature adult, this Christmas preparation is not for the faint-hearted.

Yes, the training was good for growing up. The disciple and perseverance I learned from this every year, did serve me well for the rest of my life. However, the tolerance factor is something I witness with a lot of concern in many families mainly around this time of the year.

We seem to forget the reason for Christmas. The reason is to celebrate the birth of Christ. Peace on earth, goodwill toward men. What does that mean? To me it meant to work peacefully and lovingly to get the things done – all the vast amount of work that is performed at this time of the year. For emotions can run high, – feelings around how things should be done. Everyone seems to wish to have Christmas done the way they personally envision it should be. And with people involved, each with different visions and ways of doing things, there can be unhappiness, or disenchantment. And this is where tolerance comes in. To perform the tasks with Joy, with Peace, and with Love. Love for one another, love each other. Joy to the world. Peace on earth, goodwill toward men. This is the Christmas message. This is my Christmas message to you.

Peace on earth, goodwill toward men. Good tidings of great Joy!
